There is so much about being an autism parent that feels impossible at times. The struggles, the isolation, the ambiguity can be crushing. And knowing how difficult it must be for your autistic child regardless of how it feels for you as the parent adds so much more pain. But, barring all of that, there is joy, excitement, curiosity. My son will start high school soon. But better yet, he enters a time in his life when the world starts to open up- To look bigger than just our house. This is the time that he starts to become a young man, and I couldn’t be prouder of all he has accomplished. #autism #asd #autismparenting #autismparents #autismacceptance #asdparenting #neurodiversity (NOT sponsored) Like many severely autistic people my son struggles to make friends. Summer has been hard. As a teen boy, he’s been home with me instead of out socializing, hanging out with other kids his age learning about the world. I think it’s been hard for both of us understanding what adolescence will “look like” for him as an autistic boy. But, I still made every effort to do things with him that I thought a teen boy would want to do, arcades, pizza, the trampoline park, malls, movies, music outdoors. And his favorite summer vacation at Great Wolf Lodge. He may not have a gang of teen boys to hang out with, but I think we did ok. #autism #autismspectrumdisorder #autismparenting #autismparents #asd #asdparenting #neurodiversity #greatwolflodge In the autism community, many of us have modernized our understanding of neurodiversity. We’ve moved toward neuroaffirming approaches toward supporting autistic individuals. But we are still learning what it “looks like” to be neuroaffirming for autistic families. But many communities have been fighting against normalization in their own way for decades. We can learn from their work, too.
